NEWS FOR 2016

January 1st 2016

HAPPY NEW YEAR

After a Christmas break and lots of good food, drink and company I’m here to give you an update on the wonderful world of MONEYPENNY AGENCY, our news, our artists and their plans for the forthcoming months and the year ahead.

We welcome to our roster a bunch of new acts who we’re pleased to be representing for the UK and mainland Europe.

First up there’s the interestingly named BABY DADA (they’re so new they haven’t got their own dedicated website, yet!)  who include amongst it’s assorted and variable members NEIL INNES (Bonzo Dog Do-Dah Band, The Rutles etc, etc,) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_Innes  & http://www.innesbookofrecords.com  and the multi-talented ELLIOTT RANDALL who is probably best known for the guitar solo featured on Steely Dan’s superb track “Reelin’ In The Years. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elliott_Randall  & http://elliott-randall.com  Together I am told they will be creating musical joy and mayhem alone and along with a bunch of “famous friends”.  Now discussing dates from April ’16 onwards.

Continuing with our tradition of representing some of the finest female performers in the world we’re more than pleased to welcome the multi-talented singer – songwriter DAR WILLIAMS http://darwilliams.com whose current / latest release “Emerald” (Bread & Butter Music) garnered a five star review in the UK national newspaper The Daily Telegraph when it was released in May ’15 http://darwilliams.com/2015/05/telegraph-uk-album-review and Dar undertook a brief UK tour to promote it that included a sold-out show at The Jazz Cafe, London.  We’re pleased to be booking another tour for her for the spring between May 19th and June 1st and there are still one or two dates remaining to be filled.  In addition we’re also interested to hear from any festivals who feel Dar could fit their program for the summer.

In the early ‘80’s while the national charts, in my opinion, really didn’t offer anything unusual, or musical or talented you’d look to the “indie” scene and one of my favourite acts from that time has to be THE JAZZ BUTCHER http://www.jazzbutcher.com who first caught my eye and ears with both the group name and that of their debut release “Bath Of Bacon” and I’ve been a fan ever since of the musical cavorting and soundscapes they make & create.  So, imagine my glee when James Nicholls, chief honcho at the fabulous Fire Records, made contact with me saying they’d signed TJB to the label and would be re-issuing a bunch of their material starting with the last release, the cracking, “Last Of The Gentlemen Adventures”, due out February ’16.  To coincide with its release the band, now preferring the name JAZZ BUTCHER QUARTET are raring and ready to go and play some live shows again up and the country and all the way into and across Europe and we’re taking bookings for between March 10th and April 16th

Acclaimed Two-time Grammy-winning singer and master songwriter JIM LAUDERDALE  http://www.jimlauderdale.com  is both a “songwriter’s songwriter,” who’s written/co-written many modern classics for iconic artists, as well as an intuitive sideman, who’s enhanced the music of a bevy of esteemed musicians.  Now with the superb recording London Southern a mixture of soul, country, R&B and rock and the first album he has recorded abroad. Recorded at London’s Gravity Shack Studio the album was produced by Nick Lowe’s engineer Neil Brockbank and features Nick’s recording band as the players.  Co-writers on four of the tracks include first time collaboration with one of Jim’s heroes, Dan Penn and longtime friend John Oates.  Due for UK and European release here on Proper Records in the spring we’re now booking him, solo, in the appropriate venues across the UK in throughout May ’16.

MARY COUGHLAN http://www.marycoughlanmusic.com  just where do we start describing Mary?  A mammoth task considering her talent, her history and her unique talents and takes on songs and tunes from of variety of genres – she enfolds them all in a delicious and unapologetic Irish drawl, sceptical, rueful, mournful and melting, ardent for love, all in one voice which wraps itself around Cole Porter and Jerome Kern, Elvis Presley and Joy Division, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and sails down that long river of blues that links the Mississippi to the Liffey in her magnificent Irish brogue. Now with her first album of new material since 2008, “Scars On The Calendar” brings her talents straight back into focus and to compliment that we’re booking dates for between March 15th and April 16th for the UK, not Ireland, and mainland Europe.

The final new arrival at Moneypenny Agency is the remarkably talented RICKY WARWICK http://rickywarwick.com who is perhaps best known as the front man / lead singer for the exceptional Black Star Riders (prior to which he fronted the heavy rock outfit The Almighty as well as stepping into the shoes of Phil Lynott when two of Phil’s former band mates opted to reform Thin Lizzy) who completed a nationwide tour in December ’15 playing major arenas with Def Leppard and David Coverdale’s Whitesnake.  But, Ricky is not a man to rest on his laurels and due to his massive work ethic 2016 will see him playing with his own band The Fighting Hearts when they open for Stiff Little Fingers in February followed with duo acoustic shows with Damon Johnson, also of BSR, in Europe before he embarks on his own 100% solo tour of the UK.  For these dates, which we’re responsible for booking, Ricky will be showing casing in an acoustic / semi-acoustic setting material from his two forthcoming  releases “Hearts On Trees” and the superbly titled “When Patsy Cline Was Crazy (And Guy Mitchell Sang The Blues)”.  When I met with him in Sheffield in December Ricky made it clear he wants these solo dates to be in venues not normally associated with him, he wants that intimacy, that personal feel usually found and associated with Arts Centre, cultural theatres and we believe he deserves it.  Dates are limited and will go fast so within the period 23rd May – 6th June.
