Sons of Cream

Kofi Baker, son of Ginger Baker, and Malcolm Bruce, son of Jack Bruce, have joined forces with renowned guitarist Will Johns

Here at Moneypenny Towers we’re enjoying the lovely warm weather and getting out and about as much as possible to explore and have new experiences, both musically and geographically.  That’s not stopping us booking some great acts, however, as we are creating some great tours and adding some fantastic new signings to our roster. The new acts we’re now handling (in alphabetical order) are the following:

BAP KENNEDY – www.bapkennedy.com -  I first worked with Bap many years ago when he was fronting the group Energy Orchard and then when they folded we went our separate ways so it’s great, for me, to be working with such a talented singer / songwriter / performer once again!  He’s got a brilliant new cd available now “The Sailor’s Revenge” out on Proper Records that’s been produced by Mark Knopfler no less and features Mark and his whole touring band as Bap’s backing musicians.  Now we’ve been asked to book UK and European dates for Bap and his trio for late January – early February 2014.

GAIL DAVIES – www.gaildavies.com – When Gail first reached out to me regarding us representing her I was taken aback as to how talented she is as a writer, performer and producer – in fact she was the first female producer in country music, not a mean feat!  Here’s what some of her contemporaries have said about her:

“I have been a fan of Gail Davies for over 30 years. There is no denying the talent of that woman on every level as a writer, singer and producer.” – Emmylou Harris
“Everybody in the world loves Gail Davies, especially in my world. She is one of the most talented and wonderful people I know. I will always love her.” Dolly Parton

So, it’s with great excitement that we’re booking her UK tour for November 7th – 19th 2013 and look forward to hearing from all interested venues and promoters.

JIMMY LaFAVE – www.jimmylafave.com – Many of the promoters I regularly work with have often mentioned Jimmy’s name to me and said they wished he come to the UK and Europe, again and more often.  So, it’s with great pleasure that I can say we are seeking dates for him this September between 18th – 28th to follow on from dates he has in Holland.  These shows are with his current band so everyone is for a great treat and a wonderful evening with one the finest current country / Americana singer- songwriters.

SADIE & THE HOTHEADS – www.sadieandthehotheads.com – Every so often you come across a uniquely talented performer who can excite and intrigue in many mediums and Sadie is such a one as in her “day job” she’s better known as Elizabeth McGovern aka Lady Cora in the UK ITV television drama series “Downton Abbey”.  Since discovering her musical talent and forming the Hotheads around her Sadie has toured the UK, performed at the Isle of Wight, Cornbury and Montreux Jazz Festivals as well as being invited by Gretchen Peters to be her special guest when she played the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London on her March ’13 tour.  Now, in conjunction with John Giddings and Sarah Sherlock of Solo Agency, we’ve been asked to book another UK tour this November and  dates are starting to become scarce, so book now to avoid disappointment!

SONS OF CREAM – Yes, you’ve read the name right this is Sons Of Cream and NO they’re not a tribute or cover band as there’s real genes in their blues!  Kofi Baker, son of Ginger Baker, and Malcolm Bruce, son of Jack Bruce, have joined forces with guitarist Will Johns (son of legendary producer Andy Johns and nephew of a certain guitarist called Eric Clapton!!) to bring the sound of their respective fathers and uncle legendary band The Cream back to life and they do it with all the aplomb, gusto and brilliance that you’d expect!  A short UK tour in April proved the audience is there to see and hear Cream once again as a number of the dates sold out in advance and now they’re back this November for a performance at the legendary 100 Club, London on the 12th and a foray “up north” to Fibbers, York on the 13th.  A full scale return tour is being booked right now for between February 6th – 23rd and currently we only have a few remaining!  So, don’t be disappointed get them to your venue now.

In addition to booking tours for those new clients we’re also taking bookings for these acts as well:

AMY WADGE & PETE RILEY www.amywadgepeteriley.com – UK November & December 2013

BEN GLOVER www.benglover.co.uk – UK & Ireland late September to mid-October 2013; April 2014

Farewell 2012 & Welcome 2013

Well, as this year draws to a close it’s time to say thanks to all of our acts and the promoters we’ve worked with the past twelve for making it quite a memorable year!

GRETCHEN PETERS continues to get more popular in the UK and Europe with a number of sold out shows when she’s toured here and some memorable festival appearances from her as well, this year.  Her current cd “Hello Cruel World” is being recognized as a songwriter’s masterpiece.

BRUCE COCKBURN returned to these shores for the first time in a few years and was well recieved everywhere he performed.  Plus he met up with the Canadian Paralympics Team at the London Olympics Village.

CARMEL emerged from semi-retirement with a brand new seven piece band and wowed audiences at the three very special shows she played with them.  We’re looking forward to hearing new material from her in 2013.

ALTAN popped across from Ireland for a short run of shows and once again proved why they’re probably Ireland’s finest traditional folk act!

STEVE FORBERT headed out in October (a tour we booked in association with Adastra Agency) across the UK & Ireland to promote is excellent new cd “Over With You”.

Canadian songstress, LYNNE HANSON, came across to open for Gretchen Peters in the UK for part of her March tour here, then repeated that again opening for Steve Forbert in October.  In addition Lynne played some of her own shows and is becoming recognized here as one fine singer – songwriter and a mean acoustic guitar player as well.

We’re excited to welcome some brilliant new acts to the agency – THE ABRAMS BROTHERS; BEN GLOVER; CARAVAN OF THIEVES; THE EMPERORS OF WYOMING – and these, along with our established acts will all be touring in 2013.  There are already tours announced, and on sale, GRETCHEN PETERS in February / March and PERE UBU in April.  Plus we’re working on more tours and these include the wonderful AMY WADGE & PETE RILEY; 3 BOXES; BRUCE COCKBURN; LYNNE HANSON; DAVID BROMBERG and and we’re waiting to be told what our others want for 2013.

There’s very regular updates about specific tours, and general gossip, on our Facebook page so do log in, check it out and like us - https://www.facebook.com/pages/Moneypenny-Agency/295044847185848

Meet the Nightingales

Moneypenny’s latest signing is The Nightingales, formed by former of The Prefects following that band’s demise in 1979.

With an ever fluctuating line up, based around lyricist/singer Robert Lloyd, the Nightingales enjoyed cult status in the early ’80′s as darlings of the credible music scene and were championed by John Peel, who said of them – “Their performances will serve to confirm their excellence when we are far enough distanced from the 1980′s to look at the period rationally and other, infinitely better known, bands stand revealed as charlatans”.

The group recorded a bunch of critically acclaimed singles (Almost always ‘Single Of The Week’ in the music press) and three albums, plus many radio sessions for their great supporter Peel – more than any other band bar The Fall. They also regularly toured the UK and Northern Europe, as headliners and supporting acts as diverse as Bo Diddley and Nico.

In the late Eighties the Nightingales stopped working but, following the occasional gig between times, they re-grouped in 2004, with Lloyd being joined by original Prefects guitarist Alan Apperley to its current line up, which features Lloyd, Apperley, Andreas Schmid (from Faust Studio) on bass, ex Violet Violet drummer Fliss Kitson and guitarist Matt Wood, plus on occasion bassoonist Katherine Young &/or guitarist Christine Edwards and Emily Manzo on keyboards (Christy & Emily).

Since restarting the group have been more productive than ever – releasing five 7″ vinyl singles and three studio albums (Plus two live albums), touring England, mainland Europe and USA numerous times, recording many radio sessions along the way. They have been invited to play various festivals in Europe and the States, including Glastonbury and SXSW. Their “Let’s Think About Living” 45 was ‘Single Of The Week’ on BBC 6 Music and they have continued to receive regular rave reviews for their records and live shows.

In 2008 the band recorded “Insult to Injury” with Hans Joachim Irmler of krautrock legends Faust. This record was released in February 2009 on the Klangbad label and is largely considered the best ‘gales album yet. Another Irmler produced album – “The Lost Plot” – was recorded in August 2010 but has no planned release date. A new album is due to be recorded/released in 2011 and the group will be playing more live shows in Europe and the U.S during the next year or so.

Signing New Acts All the Time

The summer is now drawing to an end and with it the festival season, however, here at Moneypenny we remain committed to ensuring all of our acts continue to receive the best possible service and Nigel is busy booking new tours and dates for all artists as well as signing up new artists all the time.

The latest addition to Moneypenny is Lisbee Stainton a London-based 23 year-old singer-songwriter known as, ‘The English Rose With The 8-String Guitar’, has been writing songs for almost 14 years. She graduated in 2009 from Goldsmiths College, University of London, with a degree in Popular Music and already with her first album under her belt, ‘Firefly’, in which she collaborated with Guildford-based producer, Rain.

Other new signings include Sidestepper and Maika Makovski (please see Artists pages for more details.

Maika has had a great summer 2011 which marked a new development in her career with her stage debut in “Desaparecer” at Teatre Romea, Barcelona, the latest production by internationally renowned director Calixto Bieto. Featuring original songs written and performed lived by Maika, sharing the stage with one of Spain’s foremost actors Juan Echanove, the show opened to rave reviews as part of the Grec Arts Festival And will tour Europe in the autumn/winter. The music from the theatre production (“Desaparecer” 2011, Outstanding Records) will be released as Maika’s 4thalbum in September to coincide with the start of the tour. A new studio album will follow hot on its heels in November and the band will tour both albums concurrently.

Sidestepper takes Latin rhythms to a unique encounter with dub and electronic music, where drum & bass, dancehall and hip-hop meet with their Latin counterparts, uniting electronic and Caribbean trance in a timeless, irresistible dance party. For the past decade, Sidestepper has toured around the world , playing such prestigious festivals as Coachella, Glastonbury, Roskilde, WOMAD, and the Hollywood Bowl World Music Festival, as well as gigs too numerous to mention in the Americas, England, Spain, France, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Norway, Corsica, Singapore, and beyond.

More tour dates have also been confirmed for Altan.

Keep an eye out for more details of new dates and tours in the next few weeks!
